THE EMISSARY

Dayn rose before Lord Purple, feeling oddly relieved that he had renewed his pledge of loyalty and so soon after his father had done so. Each time he knelt before the master of Penacles, Nathan’s eldest son experienced the same renewal of purpose. All his exhaustion, all his misgivings, faded away.

He had barely stood before Gwendolyn materialized a few feet to his left. She immediately bowed her head in the presence of Lord Purple, waiting for him to finish with Nathan’s son.

The Dragon King did not make a habit of simply sitting and waiting for spellcasters to materialize and make their pledges. Most mages were required to alert Lord Purple’s seneschal upon their arrival in Penacles, at which point Jekrith Terin would schedule their audience with the master of the City of Knowledge. The Bedlams were and had always been an exception.

Dayn involuntarily shuddered at thought of Jekrith Terin, even though he had never seen the seneschal’s face. Terin might serve Lord Purple with even more loyalty than Dayn could muster, but the lanky, hooded form reminded the younger Bedlam too much of either how the warlock Shade was supposed to appear or of a shrouded corpse that had risen from its burial.

Fortunately, Jekrith Terin rarely showed himself when the Bedlams were present, another benefit of their own particular status. Dayn never questioned why his family were so favored by Lord Purple save that his father was, of course, one of the most powerful --- if not the most powerful --- spellcasters in all the land. Unless Lord Purple sealed the palace off, the Bedlams could come to him nearly at all times.

Gwendolyn, though, was another story and Dayn grew concerned at her unexpected arrival. Not only had he thought her still with his father, but if she had decided to come to the palace now, she should have contacted Terin first.

The scaled giant seated before them only shifted slightly. “Welcome, Gwendolyn McArn.”

She dared look up. “I am honored to be allowed in the presence of Lord Purple with so little notice.”

“You were informed that I wished you to come when you were able.”

Dayn hid his surprise. Gwendolyn had not mentioned this to him during their time together.

“I meant to arrive after Dayn’s --- Master Bedlam’s --- audience with you.”

Lord Purple’s gaze shifted to Dayn. “Does her arrival offend you?”

“No, my lord.”

“Then, there is no problem. The fact that the two of you are here together simply speeds processes along. Yes, Jekrith?”

Both Dayn and Gwendolyn started as a disturbingly hollow voice echoed through the chamber. “A messenger from the emperor is approaching. Its arrival was not forewarned.”

Out of the corner of his eye, Dayn caught sight of the seneschal. The hood hung far over Jekrith Terin’s head, forming a beak of sorts. The younger Bedlam wondered how the seneschal saw. Of course, while the narrow figure did not radiate any magical trace, Dayn fully believed that Terin wielded some power.

The dark violet robe that marked the seneschal as servant to Lord Purple hung almost as if empty.
